Bajaj Auto is one of India’s best bike manufacturing companies, with headquarters in Pune, Maharashtra. It manufactures both two-wheelers and three-wheelers. The two vehicles include scooters and motorcycles, whereas three-wheeler includes auto rickshaws. Bajaj Auto has plants in Chakan, Patnagar and Wuluj.

The Company’s CEO is Rajiv Bajaj. He completed his Master’s in Mechanical Engineering and joined this Company. Rajiv Bajaj first worked in various departments like Sales, Engineering, and manufacturing, and later in 2005, he became CEO of the Company. The net worth of the Company is $13.6 billion.

The history of Bajaj Auto dates back to 1945. Jamnalal Bajaj founded this Company in the 1940s. The name at that time was M/S Bachraj Trading Corporation Private Limited. Additionally, it imported two and three-wheelers in the 1940s and sold them in India. 

However, in 1959 it got the license to manufacture two and three-wheelers in India. It also got a license from Piaggio(a Motor vehicle manufacturing Company in Italy)for manufacturing Vespa scooter brands in India. It partnered with Kawasaki and launched Kawasaki Bajaj KB -100 and Kawasaki Bajaj KB -125 in the market.

It launched numerous motorcycles in the market like Bajaj Stride, Bajaj Classic, Bajaj Sunny, Kawasaki Bajaj Boer, Bajaj Saffire, Kawasaki Bajaj 4S Champion, Bajaj Crystal DTS I, and many others. It inaugurated the Pantnagar plant in 2007, and fortunately, it manufactured 27,500 vehicles in 12 months.

In 2013 this reputed Company introduced the eDuke 390 CC, which had awarded the design.

It introduced some new motorcycles in 2015, like Avenger Street 150, Avenger Street 220, and Avenger Cruise 220.

#2. Royal Enfield

Royal Enfield is the next best Indian motorcycle company in India, whose headquarters is in Chennai. It also has a manufacturing plant in Chennai, India. The history of the Royal Enfield Company dates back to 1901. The first Royal Enfield Motorcycle was built by Enfield Cycle Company of Redditch, England, in 1901which is primarily responsible for making Royal Enfield motorcycles in India. However, in 1949, Royal Enfield came to India.

The Indian Government was in search of motorcycles that the army could use for patrolling the border, and finally, Royal Enfield was chosen for this job in 1952. In 1954 Indian Government ordered 800 Royal Enfield bikes of 350 CC model. It made it a possibility to open a manufacturing plant in Chennai, India. It partnered with Eicher motors in 1990 and collaborated with it in 1994.

Royal Enfield Company faced various difficulties in the 1990s, and the conditions were so severe that it even stopped producing motorcycles in the Jaipur factory in 2002. However, later everything was settled, and a new factory in Oragadam, Tamilnadu, opened because of the high demand for Royal Enfield motorcycles.

The Oragadam plant of this Company has the capacity to produce 600,000 vehicles in 12 months. Thus, its other Plant, Tiruvottiyur, did not remain a primary manufacturing plant and started making fewer vehicles in a year.

Today Royal Enfield Company sells motorcycles in above 50 countries over the World. It has even crossed Harley Davidson in global sales in the year 2015.

#3. TVS Motors

TVS Motors is the next bike Company in India which has headquarters in Chennai, India. It manufactures both two-wheelers and three-wheelers and export to more than 60 countries Worldwide. The two-wheelers include both mopeds and racing motorcycles. It produces 4 million two-wheelers and 120000 three-wheelers in one year and has manufacturing plants in Hosur, Mysore, and Nalagarh.

T.V Sundaram Iyengar established this Company. He provided bus service in Delhi and formed Sundaram Lyengar Sons and Sons Limited. Later, he expired, and his sons took care of the Company.

However, in 1962, Sundaram Clayton was formed after collaborating with Clayton Dewandre Holdings (UK). The Collaboration enabled the Company to manufacture numerous automotive parts in India for almost ten years.

They started setting up a manufacturing plant in 1978 at Hosur in Tamilnadu. Finally, in 1980 they launched their first moped in India, i.e., TVs 50. 

In 1982 the Company joined hands with Suzuki Motor Corporation, for which they started manufacturing motorcycles in 1984. All the vehicles launched then had the Suzuki brand so they could be sold better in the market. The products then were Suzuki Samurai, Suzuki Supra, and various others. Both the Companies, i.e., Suzuki Motor Corporation and Sundaram Clayton Limited, shared a partnership for almost 19 years, ending in 2001. It had a significant impact on the automobile market in India.

After the Collaboration ended, Sundaram Clayton Limited’s name was changed to TVS Motors. The vehicles launched by TVS Motors became famous and popular in the Indian Market.

TVS motors are the first Indian Company to launch ABS in motorcycles, i.e., in the Apache RTR series. The Company got the Design Excellence award in 2004 for Scotty PEP.

#4. Hero Moto Corp Limited

Hero Moto Corp Limited is one of the top two-wheelers manufacturers in India and has headquarters in New Delhi.

The Hero group partnered with Honda Motors(Japan) and formed Hero Honda Motors in 1984. The Company launched motorcycles in India, which were quite famous because of their lower price and fuel economy.

It launched the first motorcycle, i.e., the CD 100, in 1985, and in 1987 it produced 100,000 CD-100 units in India. Hero Honda Company was the first Company to introduce four-stroke engines in bikes. Hero Honda CD 100 had a four-stroke engine with 97 CC engine displacement. The top of that bike was 87 Km/hr, and it could generate 7.5hp peak power at 8000 rpm.

In 1989 the Company introduced another great motorcycle, i.e. Hero Honda Sleek, which was simple and elegant. It had 97.22 CC engine displacement, and it was capable of generating a peak power of 7Hp.

The Company produced numerous motorcycles in the 1990s in the Indian market. In 1991 it introduced another motorcycle called CD 100 SS in the market. Later it launched the famous Hero Honda Splendor in 1994, and in that year, 1,000,000 Hero Honda splendor were produced by the Company.

In 1997 Hero street was launched, and in the same year, it started another manufacturing plant in Gurgaon.

In 1999 it launched Hero Honda CBZ, which made its entry into many Indian homes.

2001 was a remarkable year for this Company.t produced two iconic motorcycles this year, i.e., Hero Honda Passion and Hero Honda Joy. Hero Honda’s passion was costly, and Hero Honda Joy was available at affordable rates in India.

It introduced Hero Honda Karizma in 2003, which had to speed of 130 Km/hr. Hero Honda CBZ’s name was changed to CBZ star in the same year.

The year 2005 was again a remarkable year of the Company. It produced four iconic motorcycles Glamor, CD Deluxe, Super Splendor, and the all-new Achiever. In 2007 it launched Splendor NXG in the market.

The Company celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 2009 and launched a new motorcycle Karizma ZMR in the market.

Unfortunately, in 2010, the board of directors of both the Company, i.e., Hero and Honda Motors, decided to break the partnership. The reason for breaking the partnership was to prohibit exporting vehicles to countries like Nepal and Bangladesh.

Hero Moto Corp was formed in 2011. The Company got a new identity in 2011. Now it had no restriction on selling motorcycles to any country in the World. Hero Moto Corp launched Hero I Smart, with i3S technology and a top speed of 110 Km/litre top speed. Later it launched Hero Glamour which had electronic fuel injection.

KTM is a European bike brand that has headquarters in Austria. It is well known for manufacturing off-road bikes. It sold 203,423 motorcycles in 2016, which made a record at that time.

The Bajaj Auto Company bought 14.5 percent stakes in KTM power sports AG KTM in 2007, and by 2013, it owned 47.97 percent shares of this brand. Now Bajaj auto Company is manufacturing KTM bikes in India at its Chakan Manufacturing plant and exporting to many countries Worldwide. Yamaha Motor Company is a Japanese manufacturer of bikes and scooters. It was founded in 1955. The Company started first manufacturing musical instruments and later shifted to manufacturing bikes in 1955.
