MG Hector Engine Specs and Performance

MG’s Hector has turned out to be a pleasant surprise in the price range. The car’s biggest highlights are its engine and performance. The Hectic petrol is powered by a 1.5-litre turbo unit that produces 143 hp (horsepower) and 250 Nm of torque. With the 6-speed manual, which is the standard fitment, the turbo petrol also gets the option of a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The ARAI-rated fuel efficiency of Hector petrol is 14.16 km/l for the manual and 13.96 km/l for the automatic. The Hector petrol manual variants are also available in the base Style and Super trims, while the petrol automatic is offered in top-spec Smart and Sharp trims.

The car’s more powerful engine is its diesel engine. The FCA-sourced 2.0-litre turbocharge unit churns out 170 bhp and 350 Nm of torque. The gearbox works with the 6-speed manual transmission unit. The ARAI claimed fuel efficiency of 17 kilometres per litre. The long-term vehicle is refined over time, and the fuel efficiency it would return in the real world and how the suspension copes with different situations.

The 48 V mild hybrid petrol engine comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The mild hybrid system provides up to 20 Nm of additional torque at low speed to help counter turbo lag and even allow improved acceleration. The Hector mild hybrid is also about 12 per cent more fuel efficient than the standard petrol variant, with an ARAI-rated fuel efficiency of 15.81 kilometres per litre. This variant of MG Hector of mild hybrid is available in Super, Smart, and Sharp variants.

Pros And Cons Of MG Hector

As we have already discussed above the specs and the features of the car, we are certain about the pros of the car.

Some of the pros are here discussed below.

Space and comfort

Talking about the vehicle’s spacing and comfort, the Hector has more than adequate leg space at both the front and rear seats, along with enough head space. The seats are perfectly reclined for passengers, and the window offers a full view of the roads.

Features

The overall features of MG Hector are on the positive side. This SUV is a feature-rich SUV with features like a panoramic sunroof, a large touch screen, an infotainment system, a fully digital speedometer, i-Smart technology, electric adjustment for the seats, cruise control, LED Headlamps, and many more.

Engine performance

The MG Hector has 3 engine options to choose from. The 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine comes with a small electric motor. The mild hybrid system with initial acceleration and adding 20 per cent torque and auto start-stop system. The diesel engine with an FCA sourced 2.0 turbo diesel motor has the same engine, which churns out 170 PS and 350 Nm. The diesel engine is more suited for the city as well as hill driving and cruising.

Mileage

The MG Hector smart hybrid, as well as diesel, managed to impress everyone with its fuel efficiency. The Smart Hybrid Hector offered 13.4 km/l, and even in the worst condition, the mileage was up to 10.5 km/l. In the best driving conditions, the car can achieve 17.7 km/l, which is very good for an SUV.

Suspension

The vehicle has tuned the suspension set up towards the softer side. At low speed remains plush. The car manages to soak fairly damaged roads while going at low speeds. The feel when someone sits in the back seat, one cannot feel the undulations creeping into the cabin.

Pricing

The official price for BS6 Hector Petrol starts at 12.73 Lacs, which goes up to 17.43 Lacs. The diesel variants commence at 13.48 Lacs and go up to 17.28 Lacs.

Some of the cons of MG Hector are discussed below:

Small tyre size

For a big-size SUV like MG Hector, the 18-inch tire would do the job perfectly, but the car uses a comparatively small tire which is a 17-inch. Because of the small tyre, the grip is affected and also the suspension to some level.

Gearbox

The clutch of the Hector is perfectly balanced, but the gearbox feels a little bit sluggish. The response of the gearbox is not that satisfactory.

Body roll

For an SUV that is this big, the body roll is quite a lot expected. If one turns the steering wheel quickly, the passengers can be seen swinging. The body roll is not that much in control, and the car feels slightly out of control at high-speed turns.

Poor knee support

The seating of Hector is very comfortable, while the back seats have a complaint with poor knee support. Once one sits back for a long time, one may start to feel the knee support which is lagging. Only the back seat has the issue, not the front seats.

MG Hector Competitors

The MG Hector, with its latest model, has good competitors in the market, offering exclusive features and specifications. The good sale and latest features launched by the company recently have defeated many good and pricy SUVs. Some of the cars which are compared to the MG Hector are Tata Harrier, Hyundai Creta, and Kia Seltos. While Creta and Seltos might be small SUVs but they have identical wheelbases and identical dimensions as they are based on the same platform. The Harrier is somewhat in the middle, but it is a little bit smaller than Hector in terms of length and wheelbase.

The price of the MG Hector is Rs 12.9 Lacs, while the top-spec Hector costs around 19.1 Lacs. The Hyundai Creta is more than 3 Lacs affordable, starting at 9.8 Lacs and going to 17.3 Lacs. In terms of durability, performance, and price range, the MG Hector has come up better in comparison to many other SUVs in its segment. Some other model which is compared to MG Hector is Hyundai Alcazar, Volkswagen Taigun, Mahindra Thar, Skoda Kushaq, and Mahindra Scorpio.

Conclusion

The MG Hector is concluded as one of the best luxurious cars in its segment. With the features available in its price range with the interior and exterior look, the vehicle almost outweighs the cons. The car has come up as a popular choice and has met the expectations of Indian car fanatics. The car is clever packaging ensuring the look desired by the buyer with a comfortable and spacious cabin and adequate leg space both at the front and the rear seats.
